Mac OS X Internals – A Systems Approach

By Amit Singh

Publisher: Addison Wesley Professional
Pub Date: June 19, 2006
Print ISBN-10: 0-321-27854-2
Print ISBN-13: 978-0-321-27854-8
Pages: 1680

The book “Mac OS X Internals” describes the architecture and design of Apple’s operating system. The book is targeted at anybody who is curious about Mac OS X and has a system-level interest in operating systems. At a very high (and simplistic) level, I expect this book to appeal to both those who use Mac OS X, and also those who do not.

The primary audience among the existing users of Mac OS X are those who wish to have a deep and solid understanding of the system’s composition and working. This category includes power users, developers, and administrators. Based on the feedback I have received from my earlier writings on Mac OS X, even “non-power” Mac users enjoyed my rather technical descriptions of the system. I expect such readers to find several things of interest in the book.

Among those who do not use Mac OS X, many people might be interested in finding out more about it—out of academic curiosity, to broaden their understanding of the design of modern operating systems, or perhaps because they are contemplating “switching” to Mac OS X. This category could be further broken down into the following (possibly overlapping) categories:

* The Linux community

* Other Unix communities, and possibly people from the Windows community

* The academic and research communities

* Even people who are anti-Mac, assuming such people would want to read the book to seek potential armament for the rather rampant OS-related religious warfare.

The book’s nature is better understood by reading its preface and browsing its table of contents.

Xslimmer 1.5.3 – Your Mac on a Diet!

Recover your disk space!

Xslimmer, the friendly way to right-size your apps without losing functionality.
Remove unnecessary code from fat binaries. Xslimmer determines which code your machine needs and removes the rest. This is achieved by removing the code inside the Universal Binaries that does not fit with your machine’s architecture, a code that never gets executed and just wastes your disk space.

Strip out unneeded languages. Safari is available in more than a dozen languages, Adium in more than 20. This is great, but how many of those do you need? Xslimmer allows you to select how many languages you want to preserve in your apps and will remove the rest, recovering lots of precious free space from your disk.

Xslimmer not only frees space wasted by unused code, it can even increase your Mac’s performance. Some of our users have reported applications loading in almost half the time, because OS X does not need to analyze Xslimmed applications in search for the most suitable version of the code.
