Zipeg – Free WinZip/WinRar alternative for Macintosh (and Windows)

Mac OS X 10.x has embedded Create Archive Ctrl+Click command in Finder. It also `handles` .zip archives. However there are shortcomings in archive handling. I had multigigabytes archives with thousand of images and when I need just few (one?) of them Mac OS X kept on unzipping all of the files. Slow, clumsy, eats time and disk space.

I really miss WinZip on Macintosh. This is the way it was 2 years ago now. BetterZip was not around yet and The Unarchiver was not much better than the BOMArchiveHandler. Also WinRar was not available for Macintosh and password protected AES-encrypted rar archives were out of reach.
All of that prompted me to look around. All I found was command line excellent p7zip by the author of 7-zip Igor Pavlov. I put Java UI in front of 7zip engine and did a bit of work to extract EXIF thumbnails from JPEG digital photographs. The result was Zipeg. It is available for free from:
for both Macintosh and Windows.

Cool stuff for Windows too.
It handles filenames in national characters! No other ZIP can’t do this on Windows. At least I didn’d saw any. Looks like a kind of magic, hard to believe.
Thank!
